Is Hotel Alexandra the best choice for you?

When I got to Hotel Alexandra, I thought “Ok, proceed to the lobby and check in so you can have a shower and some sleep.” I walked in and could not find my bearings. The first thing that hit me was how confusing it was to find the lobby. I felt like I had whiplash when I found security to direct me to the elevator, I realized I next needed to walk down an opulent hall that was at odds with how the exterior of the hotel looked. At the end of this hall on your right, is the lobby and hotel concierge.

Check-in was smooth albeit a little routine. 1000 Hong Kong Dollars is required to finalize the booking, just so you know. The concierge made the exchange feel rushed upon booking. It was efficient, yes but it didn’t feel warm. I believe perhaps they had a long shift and maybe did not have any more energy left at the end of the night, maybe that’s why the exchange didn’t feel light but tightly formal. I completely understand it, having been in the customer service sector myself. Long hours on your feet are not the most enjoyable of experiences and perhaps outside of this, the hotel receptionist was having a bad day/night-it happens.

With keycard in hand, it was a short walk across the reception area to the elevators. Upon entering the lift, I couldn’t help but feel cramped. It is a tiny elevator and I couldn’t wait to get to my floor. First things first, remove the shoes, wash my hands, and find the hotel slippers. Now to take a look at the space for the duration of my stay in Hong Kong:

This is the only view of the harbor from this type of room.

Mini-elevator

No need to check out with the receptionist

Synopsis : Non-smoking Diamond Side Seaview room with queen bed on the 19^th floor. The room has a shower with a rain shower head but no bathtub is present. The closet has coat hangers, an extra pillow, a shelf, plus hotel slippers. There is both a safe and a microwave present in the room.

The Pros

7-minute walk away from Fortress Hill Metro

Roller Shades for complete blackout in the room

Microwave in room

A somewhat fair side view of the harbor

Check-out before noon as opposed to eleven as is usually the case

The Cons

Getting to the hotel lobby is confusing and it’s easy to get lost (however, briefly)

Saw and felt dust on the lamp-shade, (not too little that it was not worth mentioning)

Mildew along the right edge of the shower on the floor

Not the best room if you want a wider view of the harbor

Check in at 3PM

There is no power outlet for the microwave where they have placed it. (The only option I had was to move it next to one)

If you need an overnight stay in Hong Kong for a good night’s rest, you’ll fall asleep within seconds at Hotel Alexandra. Checking out was easier than checking in. All you have to do is return to the reception area and drop the keycard into the box. Your HKD1000 is returned to your account within 5-10 days if you paid by card. Hotel Alexandra isn’t the best hotel for you if you desire outstanding views of the Harbor from your bedroom. Though if all you need is a bed for an overnight stay, then it should be more than enough to provide that.
